Welcome to EducateIndiana
We are gathering a collection of essays and reference
materials that explore the many issues in education that currently
face Hoosier parents, teachers, students and policymakers.
As we continually work to strengthen our schools,
reviewing articles and research on education policy is imperative.
As United States Senator and having served as Mayor of Indianapolis,
an instructor at the University of Indianapolis and most importantly
on the Indianapolis School Board from 1964-1967, I understand
that local school districts ultimately must make the choices regarding
specific school reforms based on their own needs. I hope that
this website will provide an open forum for constructive discussion
on these topics.
Education is more than simply mastering the “three
R’s.” While reading, writing and arithmetic are cornerstones
of a sound education, other issues such as safe and secure schools,
a student’s family and home environment and the community
support system, including health and nutrition, all play a powerful
role in shaping the educational outcome of each student.
As a child, I was blessed to have parents who
were active in my education. My mother ensured that completing
my schoolwork was the first thing that I did upon returning home
each evening. I knew that each assignment or project had to be
prepared carefully. Mother and father also encouraged my active
participation in music, sports and church activities.
There are young people all over our state who
do not have adults at home interested in their education. These
children need the support of the entire community to make sure
they reach their potential.
I hope that you find this website helpful. If

Richard G. Lugar

P.S. In recent years -- particularly since the passage of the
No Child Left Behind Act -- we all have spent time pointing to
the difficulties that some of our schools are facing. This is
necessary as we continuously seek to improve achievement. However,
I also feel strongly that we must take time to share some of the
positive stories.
I am thankful to the principals and superintendents
from across the state who have assisted me in spotlighting some
of the good things happening in their schools. I look forward
to continuing to work together with them to highlight outstanding
academic programs, teachers and students in the future.
