Number & Notables

  • 105 Hoosiers toured the U.S. Capitol Building with members of Senator Lugar’s staff in November 2007.

  • Led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Circle of Lights in Downtown Indianapolis on Friday, November 23.

  • Hosted a food drive reception to stock the shelves for Thanksgiving and raise awareness about the need to donate to food banks at Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis. 

  • Hosted a Veterans History Project Day with AARP in Brownsburg to interview local veterans for the permanent collection at the Library of Congress.

  • Received the Four Freedoms Medal from the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute for bipartisan leadership in foreign policy, energy and agriculture.

  • Delivered a speech to the U.S.-Libya Business Administration.

  • Announced Senate ratification of tax treaties with Denmark and Finland.

  • Introduced legislation with Senator Dorgan that requires automakers to produce more “flex fuel” vehicles, establishes targets for installation of E-85 or blender pumps and other infrastructure, and requires the federal government to use renewable fuels whenever possible in its vehicle fleet.

  • Announced $12 million in Federal Communications Commission funding for the Indiana Healthcare Network to connect approximately 100 health care facilities throughout Indiana and serve an array of telehealth applications.   

  • Visited with members of the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation’s Paul Harris Society.

  • Announced Senate passage of a resolution encouraging the governments of Israel and Jordan, as well as the Palestinian Authority, to continue to work in a spirit of cooperation as they address the region’s serious water challenges.

  • Participated in a Q&A on foreign policy at the Old Centrum in Indianapolis, which is home to more than a dozen not-for-profit organizations.

Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program October 2007 Update:

  • 15 strategic nuclear warheads deactivated;
  • 5 Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) destroyed;
  • 1 ICBM silo eliminated;
  • 9 ICBM mobile launchers destroyed;
  • 7 train shipments of nuclear weapons sent to safe and secure storage; and
  • 3 biological monitoring stations built and equipped.
