Number & Notables...

  • 124 Hoosiers toured the U.S Capitol Building with members of Senator Lugar’s staff in February 2008.

  • Met with ISTA’s Horace Mann teacher of the year, Peggy Billiard, in Washington, D.C.

  • Announced USDA Grant Assistance Workshops for famers, ranchers and small businessmen interested in pursuing Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements grants.

  • Met with Dr. Jo Ann Gora, President of Ball State University.

  • Warned Venezuela of consequences should President Hugo Chavez cut-off oil shipments to the U.S.

  • Announced Senate passage of a resolution to support peacekeepers in Darfur.

  • Addressed shifts in international trade in a speech sponsored by the CATO Institute.

  • Met with eight students from Emerson Visual Performing Arts School who were in Washington, D.C. as part of the CloseUp Foundation program.

  • Announced $2.2 million in grants awarded by the Department of Homeland Security to Hoosier fire departments for operations, safety and staffing.

  • Visited with the Lafayette-West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce as part of their annual visit to Washington, D.C.

  • Met with other Indiana lawmakers and the Surface Transportation Board to discuss the transaction process for CN acquisition of the EJ&E rail line and its impact on Northwest Indiana.

    Called for a repeal of the Jackson-Vanick amendment for Moldova that would normalize trade relations between the U.S. and Moldova.

  • Praised the successful test flight of a Boeing 747-400 using biofuel to travel from London to Amsterdam.

  • Introduced a resolution expressing the Senate’s strong support of NATO membership for Albania, Croatia and Macedonia.

  • Met with Mayor Bruce Hosier of Portland, Indiana.

Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program January 2007 Update:

  • 3 Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) destroyed;
  • 3 Submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) eliminated;
  • 3 train shipments of nuclear weapons sent to safe and secure storage; and
  • 1 biological monitoring station built and equipped.
