• 782 Hoosiers toured the U.S. Capitol Building with members of Senator Lugar’s staff in April 2008.

• Welcomed the 100th E85 pump in Indiana at the Lassus Handy Dandy station in Roanoke.

• Announced grants to the Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Wayne Fire Department and Plainfield Fire Department. 

• Received the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for support of pro-business issues during the first session of the 110th Congress.

• Met with James Haven, Advisory Board Member of Global Action for Children and brother to Angelina Jolie.

• Requested a flag be flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of the opening of POET Biorefining in Alexandria.

• Met with Ray Hoops, President of University of Southern Indiana to discuss education and issues of importance to the university.

• Announced $3.6 million in EPA Brownfield grants awarded to communities across the state for contaminated waste sites.

• Visited with Angela R. Timm of Bainbridge, the 2008 Small Business Person of the Year from Indiana. 

• Eliminated the final Russian SS-24 “scalpel” intercontinental ballistic missile through the Nunn-Lugar program.

Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program March 2008 Update:

• 6 strategic nuclear warheads deactivated;
• 1 Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) destroyed;
• 6 ICBM launchers destroyed; and
• 2 Submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) eliminated.

Lugar Receives Ethics Award

On Monday, April 7, Senator Lugar received the Paul H. Douglas Ethics in Government Award from the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois.  The award was established in 1992 as part of the celebration of Senator Paul H. Douglas’ 100th birthday and in recognition of his service to the people of Illinois and the nation. The award is given annually to an individual whose public actions or writings have made a significant contribution to the practice and understanding of ethical behavior in government.

In his acceptance speech, Senator Lugar called for self-reflection, discipline of study, and faith in the good will of others as the way to approach one’s duties as a public servant and to forge bipartisan relationships.  Read Senator Lugar’s full speech.
