Lugar statement on the Status of Forces Agreement

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar released the following statement on the Strategic Framework and Status of Forces Agreements with Iraq:

“The briefing for congressional staff at the White House today was substantive and staffers were able to pore over the full text of both agreements at length.

“It appears, from this reading, that the Administration has negotiated responsibly on behalf of U.S. national security interests and with the protection of American G.I.’s at the fore.

“I have urged since the Warner-Lugar amendment in 2007 that this agreement be negotiated because of its importance in moving the Iraqis toward genuine sovereignty and transitioning our own force presence into a conventional status like that which we have with many friends and allies around the world.

“Without going into details, let me just say that the text of the agreement has been well- characterized by Prime Minister Maliki in recent interviews. Secretary Rice also described this to me in our personal conversation yesterday.”
