Students interested in an internship with Senator Lugar in Washington, D.C. will intern in both his Washington and Senate Foreign Relations Committee offices.
Senator Lugar's Indianapolis office accepts students for internships all year long and his Northeast Indiana Community Service Center in Fort Wayne has volunteer opportunities available for high school students and internships available for college students.
Interns are helpful in contributing to the efficiency of office operations. Tasks vary among internships, but often include drafting letters in response to constituent requests, researching legislation or proposed initiatives, attending committee hearings, leading tours of the U.S. Capitol Building, and completing various administrative tasks. Students leave their internship with a solid understanding of operations in a Senate office.
Interns in the Washington office are placed on a rotating schedule to work in the administrative, press, correspondence, and legislative sections of the office. Interns for the Foreign Relations Committee assist staff with research on a variety of current issues of a global scale. Interns in the Indianapolis office assist with constituent casework and the other tasks necessary to provide Senatorial service to Hoosiers. High school and college volunteers/interns in the Northeast Indiana Community Service Center will initiate and assist service projects in Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas.
Interns also have the opportunity to attend speeches given by senators, representatives, administration officials, and other distinguished visitors, as well as take part in other special activities.
Eligibility Each college applicant should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be a sophomore or junior and have an interest in politics. Students from all academic disciplines who are interested in public policy, politics and foreign relations are welcome to apply. High school volunteers in the Northeast Indiana Community Center will need a supporting teacher. |
Housing Interns will be responsible for making housing arrangements in the Washington, D.C. area. However, Senator Lugar's intern coordinators can provide a list of reasonably priced housing and also websites where housing leads are posted. For summer interns, it is suggested to make housing arrangements as soon as possible. |
